Operation Red Nose

October 21, 2009

Operation Red Nose needs you!
If you can help, contact Bryan, VA3OG. (va3og@rac.ca)

Our ARES Partner, St John Ambulance, along with Safe City Brampton, Peel Regional Police and others, is sponsoring a community safety program called Operation Red Nose. It is aimed at helping drivers who feel they should not be behind their wheel to get home safely. A team consisting of 2 drivers and 1 navigator/radio operator will be dispatched to pick up the client. One driver with the navigator and the client drives the client home in their own car. The 2nd driver follows and picks up the team, ready for the next assignment.

Although a first for Brampton, Operation Red Nose has run successfully since 1984 in several other communities.

Click here to see the St John Ambulance document, Operation Red Nose. (link to be added.)

FAQ:

  1. This is NOT a taxi service. The client must have their own car with them.
  2. Dates: November 27 & 28. December 4,5,11,12,18,19. (Friday nights & Saturday nights)
  3. Times: 9 PM to 3 AM ideally (or as late as you can).
  4. Liability coverage: Drivers are covered by Client’s auto insurance, and as St John Volunteers, by a $12,000,000 policy, plus additional coverage by the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
  5. Police Check: Yes, you need one. St John Ambulance will arrange. It takes about 1 week, so let Bryan know ASAP if you are volunteering.
  6. Where: Pickup and delivery is limited to Brampton, between Steeles and Mayfield; McLaughlin and Airport Rd.
  7. Radio Operators needed: Five people are needed each night. One to serve as Dispatcher and one portable/mobile operator for each team. A GPS unit would be useful.
  8. Teams have the discretionary power to refuse to accept a client.

Fall Buildathon – sign up now!

September 27, 2009

The Peel Amateur Radio Club’s Fall Buildathon will be held on Saturday November 21, 2009 at 9:00 a.m.

The location is:

St. Bartholomews United Church
22 Abbey St.
Brampton

We will be building a “USB 16-bit AD/DA converter”. This external addition to your computer is also known as a USB stereo sound card or “S2”. All SMT parts will be pre-installed so it makes a good project for the first time builder and there will be a lot of assistance available during the Buildathon.

The project team has been organized and we are trying to keep the cost below $50.00 for club members. There will be an extra cost of $25.00 for non-club members that will include a one year membership in the Peel Amateur Radio Club.

Please register by the end of the club’s monthly meeting on October 6th, so we can order the project parts. To register for the Buildathon contact our Education Director, Wayne Highgate VA3WWH (905) 454-5831.

September 2, 2009

The Ontario VHF Association (OVHFA) holds an annual get-together every fall at Humber College in Etobicoke. This years event will be held on September 24th. Guest speakers will share interesting information, and it’s an opportunity for like-minded VHF/UHF/microwave enthusiasts to fraternize. Those who are just getting interested can chat with more experienced ops to accelerate their learning and gain valuable knowledge. A mini-flea market will also be held.

Lets show our interest and communicate our concerns.

Brampton Day

Join VA3PB who will provide all things displayable along with a portable voice and digital station. He will NEED backup in the booth, so please join him there.

National Simulated Emergency Test (SET)

Please make yourself and your station available.  This is what defines Amateur Radio and why we operate in so many frequencies in the radio spectrum.
